Description
This seminar explores the impact of institutional barriers on the educational pathways of Latino/a/x engineering students within Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and emerging HSIs. Grounded in Chicana Feminist Epistemology scholarship, the seminar describes how pláticas can be utilized as a strong and powerful methodology in engineering education research to uncover how institutional barriers shape the experiences of Latino/a/x engineering students, often positioning them as "deficient." The seminar aims to amplify the voices of Latino/a/x engineering students, discuss the historical and contemporary impacts of institutional barriers within HSIs and emerging HSIs, and examine the implications of this research for engineering education programs and practices. By addressing these issues, the research offers practitioners insights to engage in practices and creating environments within engineering education that are more responsive to the professional development of engineers.
