Student Spotlight: Jonathan Barraza

Student Spotlight: Jonathan Barraza

At a young age, Jonathan Barraza often spent time on construction sites and jobs with his father, and it was through these experiences that he began to develop a passion for engineering. Opting for Klesse College at UTSA after high school, he embraced the chance to pursue his passion while staying rooted in his San Antonio community.

Having spent so much time out in the field with his father, a degree in Civil Engineering felt like the perfect fit for him. This is a field where Jonathan envisions leveraging his skills for environmental stewardship and societal progress.

"Watching landscapes transform from barren ground to vibrant structures evokes an unparalleled sense of fulfillment,"

During his freshman year, Jonathan soared not only academically but also athletically, achieving a personal best in pole vaulting of 16 feet 1.75 inches. His dedication extended beyond the track as he joined the UTSA American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), leaving an indelible mark by joining the steel bridge construction team which led to a victory at the ASCE Region 6 Student Symposium.

Amidst his academic pursuits, Jonathan generously served as a student ambassador, epitomizing UTSA's values of community engagement and mentorship.

Under the guidance of mentors like Dr. Alberto Arroyo, Jonathan gleaned invaluable insights, crediting his diverse experiences for shaping his character.

"Pole Vault taught me the power of belief, Steel Bridge emphasized the importance of collaboration, and my role as a student ambassador underscored the profound impact of service," he reflects.

Excitement builds as Jonathan prepares for an internship with Pape-Dawson, a prestigious firm synonymous with shaping San Antonio's landscape. With graduation on the horizon in Spring 2025, he sets his sights on conquering the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam and ascending to a Professional Engineer License.

Reflecting on his journey, Jonathan cherishes the transformative education UTSA provided, vowing to carry its teachings as pillars throughout his career and life.
