The UTSA Architecture team has once again made their mark, this time by winning first place in the Student Category at the 2024 Canstruction competition for their extraordinary structure, "Puss in Boot” that is now on display at North Star Mall (through September 2024).
Led by AIAS (San Antonio Chapter of The American Institute of Architects) President Toan-My Le, and supported by fellow students Ian Hoggard, David Aguirre, Audrey Lozano, and the entire AIAS student body, the team displayed incredible creativity, precision, and dedication. Their "Puss in Boot" design was not only a testament to their architectural skills but also a symbol of community spirit and social responsibility.
Canstruction, an international food drive organized by the Society for Design Administration, aims to elevate public awareness of the global hunger crisis. Teams from around the world come together to build larger-than-life sculptures made entirely from canned goods. Here in San Antonio, the local chapters of the American Institute of Architects and the Society for Design Administration have championed this event for over a decade, partnering with North Star Mall to host the showcase for the benefit of the San Antonio Food Bank.
The UTSA team’s whimsical and intricate creation wowed the judges at the Can opener Awards Ceremony, where over 250 industry and community members gathered to celebrate the achievements. The structure, along with others in the competition, will remain on display at North Star Mall for two weeks, giving the public a chance to vote for the People’s Choice Award.
At the conclusion of the event, all 2,184 cans used in "Puss in Boot," along with the thousands more used by other teams, will be donated to the San Antonio Food Bank, helping to feed families in need and making this victory even more meaningful. Congratulations to the UTSA Architecture team for their outstanding achievement and contribution to the community!
