Mechanical Engineering graduate James Moseley came to UTSA with a clear mission and a well-defined plan. Inspired by his high school science and technology courses, James knew he wanted to pursue a career in engineering. His fascination with machinery, complex and simple alike, made mechanical engineering the perfect fit for him. Read the full Q&A below to learn more about James’ journey and his advice for future Roadrunners.

What made you decide to attend UTSA?

The proximity, reasonable price, and existing connections to alumni led me to choose UTSA.

Did you have any experience with engineering before starting at Klesse College? If not, what inspired you to pursue a career in engineering?

I didn’t have any engineering experience prior to starting my degree but what led me to pursuing engineering was my affinity for STEM related classes in high school and my relatives that became engineers.

What drew you into Mechanical Engineering specifically?

I would say that my high school physics classes drew me into mechanical engineering. I enjoyed learning about thermodynamics, electrical motors, and basic mechanics and the fact that those classes left me with multiple questions about the world and the technology we use daily were the main factors.

What did you enjoy most about your experience at UTSA?

The most enjoyable part about my experience here, easily, was the number and diversity of opportunities it has to offer. Even in just spending a few hours at the UTSA Makerspace you quickly realize that there’s a lot of involvement here at UTSA.

What have you learned, in your time at UTSA, that surprised you the most?

I might say that what surprised me the most to learn was that it’s easy to take what you might consider to be a simple piece of technology for granted. Essential technologies that you have lived with all your life like toasters, fridges, and thermostats have become easy to use so you don’t have to think much when using them. But once you start peeling out the exterior layers behind those devices you can begin to have a deeper appreciation for those essentials.

What are your goals or plans after graduation?

I plan to pursue a career in an engineering field related to energy such as alternative energy sources, HVAC or maybe even an industrial position.

What advice do you have for people considering the programs at UTSA?

I recommend that you take your time to think when considering a program and to try checking in with current students or alumni from that program. I started my degree right after high school because I knew it would be a good fit for me but please take your time as any degree is a major investment.
