At a young age, Dalen Ricks developed a fascination with computers, a strong interest that grew substantially over time. After deciding to attned UTSA, Dalen honed his interests and continued to pursue his passion for computers and circuitry, with a focus on computer architecture. Dalen came into college knowing what he wanted to do, and now after graduating, he is more than happy to share his achievements and story with others. Read the full Q&A below to learn more about Dalen's journey and his advice for future Roadrunners.

What made you decide to attend UTSA?

I was attracted to the engineering program and how hands-on the courses were.

Did you have any experience with engineering before starting at Klesse College? If not, what inspired you to pursue a career in engineering?

My dad is a cyber security specialist, so I have him to thank for introducing me to computers and engineering. I started programming when I was 15 and fell in love with computers and circuit design, so I decided to make a career out of it.

What drew you into Electrical and Computer Engineering specifically?

I liked the idea of getting one of the smallest particles in the universe to do work for you. With my interest in computer architecture specifically, it feels like I'm designing a little city for all the electrons to live and work in. A giant Rube Goldberg machine of sorts - one module leading into another one and magically getting work done.

What did you enjoy most about your experience at UTSA?

I really enjoyed the community. The number of student organizations and faculty that are willing to help you was a highlight of my time here.

What have you learned, in your time at UTSA, that surprised you the most?

The thing that surprised me the most was the amount of knowledge that goes into research. Growing up I heard about it, but I didn't know exactly how much went into it until I got into labs and talked to Ph.D students. Working in labs was such a humbling experience, because just when you thought you learned a lot and almost knew everything about a subject, they would quickly show you that it's deeper and wider than you could imagine.

What are your goals or plans after graduation?

My goal is to work as a computer chip designer and make processors.

What advice do you have for people considering the programs at UTSA?

Look to student organizations to help you find more topics that you're interested in. If you think you will enjoy something, join an organization to get experience in it. It will help you determine whether you will like it, and if you do, you already have a head start in that field.

What is your life motto/ slogan?

Keep life in perspective, and take it one task at a time.
