After obtaining her undergraduate degree in physics, Mignon “Miggy” Frances Dumanjog chose to follow her passion, graduating with a degree in biomedical engineering. Interested in seeing her visions of helping people brought to life, Miggy felt that biomedical engineering was the best path for her. Now, as she reflects on her experiences—and some potential canoeing adventures—Miggy has some advice for her fellow Roadrunners. Read the full Q&A below to learn more about her journey.

What made you decide to attend UTSA?

I was really drawn to the joint Biomedical Engineering program with UT Health because I felt like there would be an extended amount of resources and research opportunities given UT Health’s clinical side and UTSA’s engineering focus.

Plus, I just love the rich culture in San Antonio. It’s a big city with a lot of things to experience, yet it doesn’t feel too crowded.

Did you have any experience with engineering before starting at Klesse College? If not, what inspired you to pursue a career in engineering?

I did my undergraduate degree in physics, so no… but it’s very related. I wanted to be an engineer because I wanted to see my ideas come to life. Engineering, after all, is the application of physical concepts to create something impactful to the world.

What drew you into Biomedical Engineering?

The interdisciplinary aspect of it and the chance to improve patients' lives. I've always loved biology and physiology since I was a kid, and this field lets me combine that passion with my physics background to tackle healthcare challenges.

What did you enjoy most about your experience at UTSA?

The research opportunities that I got from apprenticing at research labs, especially at Qutub lab where I currently work. Quiet areas in the libraries have a special place in my heart… for some reason, I just get work done so easily there.

What have you learned, in your time at UTSA, that surprised you the most?

That you can rent a canoe from Outdoor Pursuits. I almost did it too! They helped me get it on top of my car but I backed out because it looked silly on my hatchback.

What are your goals or plans after graduation?

I’m going to present some of our research in conferences and symposiums. Eventually, I want to work in biotech particularly as an AI engineer in medicine. I understand that AI is here to stay, and my goal is to develop AI tools that are both ethical and explainable.

What advice do you have for people considering the programs at UTSA?

Dedicate some time figuring out what you like and choose a degree program which excites you. Above all, prioritize your mental well-being and study at your own pace.

Make sure to take advantage of resources here. UTSA offers free therapy sessions! And I highly recommend attending them, those have really helped me get through tough times. Also you can chat with your advisors, hit up tutorials, get coached for job interviews at the Career Center, or have fun climbing the rock wall and taking fitness classes at the Rec. You can also rent camping gear or join a hike with Outdoor Pursuits if you're into outdoor adventures.

What is your life motto/ slogan?

“The past is in my head, the future is in my hands.”
