Klesse College names Dr. Chris Combs as the next Associate Dean for Research. In this role Dr. Combs will drive strategic research initiatives, foster collaborations, and support faculty in advancing Klesse College’s research enterprise.

Combs joined UTSA in 2018 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2023. Throughout that time, he has been dedicated to advancing research, mentoring faculty and students, and elevating the university’s reputation in engineering and innovation. Through his leadership, he has helped position UTSA as a key player in hypersonics and experimental aerodynamics, including the creation of a new masters in Aerospace Engineering in 2023.

Combs will oversee the strategic development of Klesse College’s research initiatives in his new role, including faculty support systems and facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations to ensure continued research excellence. He also said he is eager to champion UTSA’s incredible work and expand its visibility, creating new opportunities for faculty, students, and research partnerships.

“This is a pivotal time for Klesse College, and I’m excited about the role I can play in helping to shape that future,” Combs said. “We’ve grown quickly and developed our research capabilities. Now, it’s time to amplify that success. I look forward to advocating for our students, faculty, and staff while ensuring our research efforts continue to thrive.”

Combs thanked his predecessors, Dr. David Akopian and Dr. Harry Millwater, for their invaluable guidance and contributions. He credited their leadership for creating a strong foundation that he is eager to build upon as he takes on this vital role.
