Immigrating to San Antonio at the age of four, Khanh Nguyen, the Senior Program Coordinator for the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, started her higher educational journey as a first-gen student at UTSA. Throughout the process of obtaining her first degree in Anthropology, Khanh struggled to navigate the challenging collegiate landscape but was able to surpass this hurdle and excel in her field through her own merits, as well as the incredible support she received from others.
I struggled a lot during my first degree, made mistakes, and faced challenges I didn't always know how to overcome. But I also found incredible support from administrators, counselors, advisors, and coordinators who helped guide me through. Without them, I wouldn’t have made it. That journey is what inspires me every day. I strive to be that same source of support and encouragement for students who are finding their way, just like I once was.
It was throughout her first degree in anthropology that she began to gain a greater appreciation of the vibrant UTSA community and the various cultures that comprised it. This appreciation of UTSA, and the people that make it so special, only grew as Khahn witnessed the community come together in multiple times of crisis.
As the senior program coordinator for the electrical and computer engineering department, she spends much of her time working closely with students, faculty, and other staff and ensuring that the program is the best that it can be. Recalling her collegiate journey, Khanh not only understands the value a supporter could have on a student’s experience but also enjoys the opportunity to help students both academically and as moral support.
The insights I gained through my experiences continue to guide me in my work in higher education, where I’m dedicated to supporting students from all backgrounds as they navigate their academic journeys.
Khanh is currently working her second degree in electrical engineering and is excited to continue her work for the upcoming Fall semester.
