It is with incredible sadness that we share that one of our undergraduate architecture students, Claire “Reese” Manchaca, passed away this weekend during the flooding. It is an incredibly difficult time, and this news is heartbreaking. We cannot imagine the devastation that her family, friends, and community are experiencing.

Reese was a vibrant part of our architecture community and left an indelible mark on her peers and our college through her creativity, kindness, and energy. She had just completed her junior year and was looking ahead with excitement to what came next in her journey. In the fall of 2024, she studied abroad in Urbino, Italy, where she immersed herself in the beauty of the art, culture, and architecture of Italy for a full semester. During that time, she built meaningful, lasting bonds with her classmates and faculty, leaving a deep impression on everyone around her. Our hearts are heavy as we try to comprehend this profound loss.

Many of us are deeply affected by this news, and we hope you are able to take time for yourself as you process and grieve.

UTSA will hold a virtual moment of reflection today at 5:30 PM. At noon on Friday, July 11, an on-campus reflection will be held. We hope you will join us if you are able.

Below, you will find resources that are available to our students and faculty. Klesse College and the School of Architecture and Planning are here to support you. Please don’t hesitate to call, visit, or reach out whenever you need to talk or connect. You are not alone. We stand with you in this shared grief.

Take care of yourself, your loved ones, and each other.
