Every three years, CIB, an international organization dedicated to all aspects of research and innovation in the construction and built environment sector, hosts its World Building Congress. The congress, which brings together leading building and construction experts from around the world to discuss their research and future goals, recently concluded its 2025 conference at Purdue University.
This year’s conference featured more than 400 research papers by international experts in which two members of the UTSA Klesse College School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Construction Management (CECM) community, Doctoral Candidate, Roy Lan, and Associate Professor, Ibukun Awolusi, made waves with their extraordinary research. Through their efforts, they took home the Best Paper Award for Safety, Health & Wellbeing in Construction, for their paper entitled, UAV-DL-Based Computer Vision Framework for Construction Worker Pose Estimation.
“This innovative work combines artificial intelligence and drone technology in computer vision applications to improve construction safety and health monitoring,” Awolusi said. “The research has the potential to address critical industry needs by enabling automated and real-time detection and analysis of unsafe worker postures for injury and accident prevention on construction sites.”
According to Professor Arturo Schultz, Director of the CECM School, this international recognition positions students like Roy as emerging leaders in construction technology research, and I congratulate him for his exceptional effort on this research paper and his advisor, Dr. Awolusi, on the mentorship. “This achievement further reflects UTSA’s growing reputation in cutting-edge construction research and demonstrates the global impact of work being conducted within the CECM School at the UTSA Klesse College.”
