A team of Construction Science students squared off against 29 other teams in a national competition testing their construction management skills.

The Construction Management Competition hosted by the Associated Builders and Contractors promotes careers in construction management. Teams experience actual projects where they can test their project management, estimating, safety, quality control and presentation skills.

“This competition is a very unique and challenging learning experience that helps our students to grow into stronger professionals,” Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Construction Management Dr. Tulio Sulbaran said. “It also provides valuable insight into how the UT San Antonio Construction Program can continue to improve, ultimately benefiting future generations of UTSA graduates.”

First year student Everett Flores, who was an alternate this year, said he is looking forward to next year’s competition. He wants to help the team improve overall. It finished 23rd out of 30. It’s highest ranking was 13thfor quality.

“I would really like for us to improve on what we did this year,” Flores said. “I would definitely like us to get in the top three in at least one category.”

The competition started in January and finished last month. Teams worked on different project disciplines and members of the ABC South Texas chapter were mentors. Turner Construction mentored them in estimating. Bartlett Cocke General Contractors was the project management/scheduling mentor. SpawGlass was the safety mentor. Joeris General Contractors was the quality control mentor.

Flores said the team would work on a section of the project from Monday through Thursday then present it to the mentor on Friday who would offer feedback.

“The students demonstrated tremendous dedication, and the companies and their employees offered a significant amount of support to the students,” Sulbaran said.

Students who participated in the competition were Flores, Obelisk Bustamante, Irving Estrada, Natalie Liendo, Yolanda Lozano, Karen Pascual, Steve Rodriguez and Samantha Sanchez. Lozano and Sanchez led the team.
