Check out the full Q&A with Arelene down below to learn more about her journey, and where her creativity and drive will take her next!
What made you decide to attend UT San Antonio?
While I have been in Texas for nearly 9 years now, I originally came here from Washington State right at the start of highschool! Due to Covid, however, I feel that I didn't really have the chance to immerse myself and truly experience the culture here in San Antonio. Having the opportunity to become more involved in my community became easy through my attending at UT San Antonio, and it was close to home as well!
Did you have any experience with your field before starting at Klesse College? If not, what inspired you to pursue a career in your field?
For so long, I actually wanted to be some form of an airline pilot! As I grew up and grew closer to the people around me, however, I realized that the lifestyle didn't necessarily fit my priorities. From this, I wanted to find some path that could fuel my ultimate passion which was, of course, creativity! From a young age, I loved painting, coloring, creating, and storytelling. Being my parent's first child, I also saw them buy their first house, and through many DIY projects and renovations, make a home for my family. As a kid, I spent my time at my parents' side doing tile work, wood decking, room painting, and holding any tool that wouldn't injure me. I found out that with this experience and my inclination to the arts might make Interior Design perfect for someone like me!
What did you enjoy most about your experience at UT San Antonio.
PEOPLE. I truly think life is impossible without community, and growth can not exist without challenge and aspiration. I remember when I started college I would look to other student leaders in awe. So many students are incredibely self driven and passionate to succeed, and this absolutely influenced me in my journey. UT San Antonio promotes connections with others you would have never met otherwise. It is truly a hub of collaboration, growing, and community.
What have you learned, in your time at UT San Antonio, that surprised you the most?
On my first day, at the School of Architecture and Planning, I found out I would be required to go on a semester long study-abroad in Urbino, Italy as a part of the design program. I probably should have realized this early of course, but after recently coming back from it, I have changed so much as a person and gained such a great worldy experience that will follow me for the rest of my life. I am so grateful that it's such a supported program at UT San Antonio, and believe it was the most pivotal semester during my time here.
What are your goals or plans after graduation?
After graduation, I am looking forward to contributing to our society through design. I would love to work in civic, healthcare, and/or hospitality as I feel these specialties can lead to the most impact in our daily lives. I am fortunate to be in residential design currently, but would love to ultimately gain my license as an Interior Designer and have a greater contribution to our communities!
What advice do you have for people considering the programs at UT San Antonio?
When considering UT San Antonio, regardless of your path, look into the organizations that support your career. These connections are what will truly help you grow as a person. Attending events, gaining friends and collaborators, and connecting with mentors are all crucial experiences in life! Having the support and being inspired by my fellow organization members as well as classmates challenged me and has allowed me to gain an amazing community during my time here.
What is your life motto/ slogan?
My motto is it's not hard to work hard, and things are only difficult because you care. If you didn't care, everything would be easy, but it might not necessarily lead to the life you want.
Who helped you get to today?
Like I've said, all of my communities at UT San Antonio have benefitted me in so many ways. I graciously attribute my successes to the staff at the student success center, the Interior Design professors at the School of Architecture and Planning, and my time amongst the Klesse Student Advisory Council. I would also like to highlight my boyfriend who, being in the Architecture program, truly understands the strife and struggle of the design field alongside me. He's been there for the late nights, my journey to saving up for my study-abroad, the crazy logistics of event planning within my orgs, and everything in between. Having someone to support you and also truly gets it is so important.
