About CAMLS

CAMLS, established in 2007, is a center of manufacturing and enterprise excellence at the University of Texas at San Antonio. With our two thrust areas - Advanced Manufacturing Systems and Lean Enterprise Systems, we aim to provide state-of-the-art technology applications to cater to the growing manufacturing base in San Antonio. We are a highly interdisciplinary center with faculty participation from multiple engineering departments and other colleges, including the College of Business and the College of Sciences. We work closely with industry to meet their needs and aim to establish a well-recognized research platform, providing unique expertise in flexible and lean manufacturing technologies and systems.

At CAMLS, our existence and initiatives are fundamentally driven by the need to support San Antonio's expanding manufacturing base. The recent growth of the city's manufacturing sector, including key players like Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, Pratt & Whitney, Standard Aero, and San Antonio Aerospace, Inc., has created an increasing demand for advanced training and education in areas of advanced machining, lean manufacturing, and integrated manufacturing systems. We cater to hundreds of small and medium-sized manufacturers, playing a critical role in enhancing San Antonio's economic base. The establishment of Port San Antonio, Toyota's new truck assembly plant, and Caterpillar's recent acquisition of a manufacturing facility are indicative of the city's growing manufacturing prowess. We at CAMLS provide the necessary expertise to further propel this growth.

Motivation

CAMLS was established as a response to the rapid growth of San Antonio's manufacturing base. Key developments, such as the establishment of Port San Antonio, the introduction of Toyota's new truck assembly plant, and Caterpillar's recent acquisition of a manufacturing facility, significantly boosted San Antonio's manufacturing sector. The city, home to prominent aviation companies like Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, Pratt & Whitney, Standard Aero, and San Antonio Aerospace, Inc., also houses hundreds of small and medium-sized manufacturers.

These enterprises play a crucial role in bolstering the city's economic base. Recognizing the need for advanced training and education in advanced machining, lean manufacturing, and integrated manufacturing systems, the University of Texas at San Antonio launched CAMLS to cater to these urgent needs.
