The Sam Madrid, Jr. Endowed Scholarship in the College of Engineering was established in the Fall of 1998. It is named after a native San Antonio engineer with a long record of professional and community achievements. Mr. Madrid graduated from San Antonio Vocational Technical High School. After serving in the U. S. Navy, Mr. Madrid attended Texas A&M University under the G. I. Bill and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Madrid started his employment at Kelly AFB as the first Hispanic design engineer ever hired. He advanced into executive-level positions including many years of service as Executive Assistant to the Commander. Simultaneously, he was deeply involved in community work, including service as Chairman of the Bexar County Hospital Board of Managers, President and Board Chairman of the United Way’s Board of Trustees and Charter Board Member of the Economic Opportunity Development Corporation. Mr. Madrid has been a perennial supporter of education and was involved in establishing the Engineering Program at The University of Texas at San Antonio.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Applicant must be a current student at UTSA or an incoming freshman for the Fall 2019 Semester.
• Must have graduated from a San Antonio area high school.
• A “B” average in his or her high school work and a “B” average (at least a 3.0 grade point average) in any college work.
• Applied for financial aid through The University of Texas at San Antonio Office of Student Financial Aid and must be certified as having a financial need by that office.
• Declared major in the UTSA College of Engineering.

Recipient Requirements Scholarship recipients must enroll as a full-time student in The University of Texas at San Antonio in the 2020-2021 academic year and must pursue one of the majors listed in the eligibility requirements.

• Scholarship is renewable for up to three years after initial scholarship is awarded if the student maintains the minimum GPA and full-time status. Renewal is dependent upon availability of funds.
• As long as women make up less than 50% of the students enrolled in the undergraduate electrical engineering program at UTSA, women will be given preference in the scholarship selection process.

This scholarship was established in the Memory of Eric Daniel Hernandez, who died tragically the morning of December 24, 2013. He was a junior at UTSA, pursuing a Mechanical Engineer degree at the time of his death. Eric was a young man with various interests and played various musical instruments such as 6 string bass guitars along with the ukulele. He was a Mexican Folkloric dancer for 17 years. He was a season ticket holder for the San Antonio Spurs and was a great supporter of the Roadrunner football team. He was a very generous person, who loved life. He was a great friend, a tremendous son and brother.

Teresa Duran Alferes was born in the city of Aguascalientes, Mexico in 1916. She was a gifted student of music and became a concert pianist. She died giving birth to her third child in June 1945 at the young age of 29.

Jesus Esparza Reyes was born in the city of Chihuahua, Mexico in 1915. He only had the opportunity to finish secondary school before becoming an apprentice machinist at age 15, working for a gold and silver mining company in central Mexico. He became a journeyman by the time he was 20 due to this precision machining skills, and the machine shop foreman soon after. While in secondary school he learned to play basketball and other sports, and became an exceptional basketball player who as an adult was invited to join state select teams that participated in first division national tournaments for almost 12 years while working full-time and eventually raising a family.

After the death of Teresa, with two young children to care for, he remarried in Monterrey, Mexico in last 1946. There, he became the machine shop supervisor for the GE light bulb factory. By then, he had learned on his own engineering drawing, Algebra and Trigonometry which he used to design and fabricate prototype, high precision machine parts. By 1954, his family included six children. In search for better education and economic opportunities for himself and his children, he immigrated to the U.S. and worked in machine shops in Los Angeles, Houston and eventually San Antonio. In 1955, with all the required immigration visas, he brought his family to San Antonio. By 1960, after two additional children were born in San Antonio, the rest of the family applied and was granted U.S. citizenship. Soon after, he began his career as a civil servant machinist at Kelly AFB where he worked for 22 years. While at Kelly, he built the reputation as the best machinist on base. He received numerous awards and commendations for his suggestions that improved the precision machining of parts, some weighing up to a ton, for many USAF aircraft including the B-52, B-58, C-141 and C-5. At his retirement, he was presented a commendation from President Carter. Jesus was called to the Lord in March 2014, just short of his 99th birthday, leaving behind 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

• It is the Donor’s preference that recipients be either U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents, and that they also be children of first – or second-generation immigrants from the region on the continent of North America south of the U.S. border. For this purpose, first – or second-generation immigrant children are those who have a least one parent or grandparent who immigrated to the United States.
• Preference will be given to students who graduated from a high school located in Bexar County, Texas.
• Must have demonstrated financial need as determined by the UTSA Office of Student Financial Aid.
• Scholarship is renewable for up to two (2) additional years provided the student maintains the minimum 2.75 undergraduate GPA and full-time enrollment at the University.

• San Antonio ABET Accredited Engineering Curriculum (UTSA, Trinity, St. Mary's [1]).
• Full-time student in good standing.
• Student Member of ASME.
• U. S. Citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States.

Scholarships will be awarded in two equal installments (50% for each semester enrolled [2]).
