In an integrated, design-centered environment that extends out into the city and beyond, our students explore the territory between the local and the global, context and theory, history and innovation, and the search for universal rules and the immediacy of place-based practice.
Recent innovations and ideas propel both student and faculty explorations, practices and studies: the evolution of technology, digital environments and fabrication, landscape urbanism, sustainability, the tensions inherent in the expanding city and its urban fabric, as well as the dynamic between product and process. The MArch program is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).
Our architecture programs are part of the sequence that leads to professional licensure commonly called the three Es: Education, Experience and Examination.
See the NCARB links for further details about Experience and Examination:
The School of Architecture + Planning offers three graduate certificate programs: Historic Preservation, High-Performance Design and Sustainability, and Urban and Regional Planning. Refer to the Graduate Catalog for additional information about these programs.
Our curriculum is conceived as a braid. These braids form distinct and interconnected dialogues that transverse the programs. In turn, they give shape to the School’s curriculum, atmosphere, and identity. Braids are found throughout each program of study: Interior Design, Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning; each separate braid interconnects with the others. Questions, practices, and Inquiries form at their interstices. By thoughtfully joining theory and practice, these braids pass through our courses in sequence having emerged over time as we evolved as a school. In this way, the curriculum responds to the genius loci of San Antonio, our educational mission and vision, our commitment to provide students with a rich and varied educational environment, our link with the professions, and our dedication to scholarship and research.
