Strategic Plan

The CECM School seeks to deliver the highest quality education and research in all aspects of the built infrastructure. We offer undergraduate degrees in Construction Science and Management (CSM) and Civil Engineering (CE), as well as graduate degrees in CSM and CE, Facility Management (FM) and Environmental Science and Engineering (ESE). At the CECM School, we educate every student with an overarching philosophy that student education should be more than a collection of courses. We combine academic fundamentals in lecture courses, with hands-on learning in laboratories, group projects, research opportunities, and internships. The students are exposed to industry best practices by local practitioners, as well as teamwork and goal-oriented learning through the KCEID Signature Experiences. Each graduate from the CECM School should excel in four broad areas. First, they should master the principles of their disciplines which are acquired in courses taught by excellent faculty in a modern higher education setting. Second, they should strive to seek innovative solutions to infrastructure and environmental challenges by utilizing knowledge gained in their courses and state-of-the-art methods experienced in their research activities and internships. Third, they should be committed to the goals of their future employers and the benefit of their future clients. And lastly, they should always be prepared to serve the public good for the benefit of humanity and our planet.

To achieve our vision and mission, we have a strategic plan with 5 overarching goals.

Goals

Goal 1. CECM School structure: Complete the full merger of the former CSM and CEE Departments to leverage the full potential of our faculty, students, and staff.

  • Advance policies and resources available to CSM faculty in the KCEID which differed from those in the former CACP.
  • Enhance the exposure and opportunities of CECM students for learning and research in laboratories, including renovation of existing laboratories and construction of new laboratories.
  • Continue to investigate additional degree programs that will fit well within the CECM School vision, and which will enable enhanced synergies and opportunities for students and faculty in the existing programs.
  • Seek and maintain accreditation from national bodies for all degree programs in which they are considered appropriate.

Goal 2. CECM student body: Recruit, retain, and graduate a larger, more academically prepared student body that is representative of the demographics of Texas and the US.

  • Work with the KCEID Student Success Center to recruit and admit the most qualified students to the CECM School.
  • Create programs and funding mechanisms to attract the best and brightest students.
  • Participate with the KCEID Student Success Center to improve retention and graduation rates for CECM undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Foster ethics and professionalism among the CECM student body.

Goal 3. Excellence in teaching and research: Attain national recognition as a publicly funded School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Construction Management.

  • Maintain continuous assessment and modernization of CECM undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
  • Continue to build research programs that enhance the academic reputation of the CECM School.
  • Collaborate with KCEID and UTSA to develop nationally recognized centers of excellence.
  • Expand the faculties in the CECM School by hiring highly competitive faculty that are representative of the student body they serve.

Goal 4. Community engagement: Build connections with local, regional, and national communities to enhance student experience.

  • Take advantage of the ever-expanding landscape of e-business solutions to reach stakeholders.
  • Provide delivery methods for teaching and research that are attractive to students and other stakeholders.
  • Consult with UTSA Academic Innovation (AI) for the use of standardized software to deliver subject matter content.
  • Work with the KCEID Dean’s Office and Student Success Center to develop and advertise community engagement projects with CECM students.
